Where it came from
Fairy Ranmaru is a 2021 original television anime series produced by Studio Comet and commissioned by Pony Canyon. The project emerged from a landscape of experimental late-night anime, blending the magical boy genre with surreal, high-fashion aesthetic elements. It was conceptualized to offer a distinct, visually stylized experience that diverged from conventional tropes, focusing on a group of youths tasked with healing the hearts of those suffering in modern society.
The series was directed by Masakazu Hishida, who sought to emphasize a bold, flamboyant visual language that integrated transition sequences and costume designs heavily inspired by contemporary Japanese street fashion and traditional folklore motifs. Upon its release, it was noted for its unconventional production choices and specific artistic direction, sparking niche discussions among fans of the magical girl and magical boy subgenres for its departure from traditional narrative structures.
