Where it came from
From the Dolphin is a representative work emerging from the Geidai Animation program at the Tokyo University of the Arts, a department renowned for fostering experimental and auteur-driven short-form filmmaking. Created as part of the rigorous academic and artistic curriculum, the film serves as a showcase for emerging animators to explore visual storytelling beyond commercial constraints, often emphasizing personal expression and stylistic innovation.
The production reflects the characteristic emphasis of the Geidai department on craftsmanship and nuanced motion. By utilizing traditional and hybrid animation techniques, the creators sought to explore themes of nature and connectivity through a surrealist lens. The film was primarily received within the independent animation festival circuit, where it earned appreciation for its atmospheric quality and the technical proficiency typical of the program's graduates.
