Furiten-kun

Released in 1981, the film Furiten-kun serves as a feature-length adaptation of the long-running gag manga by Masashi Ueda. The series centers on the misadventures of a perpetually unlucky mahjong player, reflecting the popularity of the game in Japanese office culture during the late twentieth century. By translating Ueda's four-panel comic style into animation, the movie aimed to capture the deadpan humor and satirical look at salaryman life that defined the original publication.

The character design remains faithful to Ueda’s minimalist, iconic aesthetic, which prioritizes expressive sight gags over complex illustration. The film was produced during a period when manga adaptations were becoming a staple of the Japanese animation industry. While it serves as a piece of period-specific pop culture, it is primarily remembered by enthusiasts of classic gag manga for successfully preserving the comedic timing and cynical, absurdist spirit of the source material.
