Gakkou no Yuurei

Gakkou no Yuurei, or School Ghost Stories, was released in 1995 as a direct-to-video production by the studio Aubeck. Emerging during a period when Japanese horror-themed animation targeted toward younger audiences was finding a niche in the home video market, the project sought to capitalize on the enduring popularity of urban legends and folklore surrounding school life. The episodic nature of the OVA allowed for a series of supernatural vignettes, each centered on traditional spectral figures common to Japanese elementary school myths.

The visual direction and character designs were crafted to evoke a sense of eerie, nostalgic simplicity, balancing lighthearted school settings with genuine, unsettling supernatural encounters. While the series did not achieve the widespread international cult status of later horror anime, it remains a notable example of mid-nineties animation aesthetics. Within the context of its release, the project was appreciated for its atmospheric approach to the 'kaidan' tradition, effectively bridging the gap between moralistic children's tales and traditional Japanese ghost stories.
