Where it came from
Released in 2002, Galerians: Rion is a feature-length computer-animated film that serves as a condensation and reimagining of the 1999 PlayStation survival horror game Galerians. Produced by Enterbrain, the project was created to expand the franchise's reach beyond its console roots, distilling the complex narrative of Rion Steiner—a boy with psychic powers fighting to stop a supercomputer—into a singular cinematic experience.
The production utilized stylized 3D animation common to the era, aiming to maintain the dark, industrial, and dystopian aesthetic established by the game's original character designer, Sho-u Tajima. While the film was welcomed by existing fans for its faithfulness to the source material's grim atmosphere, it received a modest critical reception, often noted for the technical limitations of its digital animation, which highlighted the challenging transition period for 3D anime production in the early 2000s.
