Gatchaman Crowds

Gatchaman Crowds was produced by Tatsunoko Production in 2013 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original Science Ninja Team Gatchaman series. Rather than serving as a direct remake, the studio aimed to reinterpret the core themes of the classic franchise for a contemporary audience. The series shifted the focus toward modern societal issues such as social media connectivity, the ethics of altruism, and the speed of digital information, framing these concepts through the lens of a colorful, avant-garde superhero narrative.

The visual identity of the series was defined by character designer Kinoko and director Kenji Nakamura, who opted for a vibrant, high-energy aesthetic that contrasted sharply with the somber tone of the 1970s original. By utilizing bright, neon-saturated palettes and complex digital motifs, the team intended to reflect the frantic pace of the internet age. Upon its release, the series received notable critical attention for its philosophical inquiries and unconventional approach to the magical girl and superhero genres, establishing itself as a distinct entry in the studio's long-running history.
