Where it came from
Genius Party Beyond was released in 2008 as the second anthology film in the ambitious Genius Party project produced by Studio 4°C. Following the success of the initial 2007 collection, this follow-up was conceived as a showcase for experimental animation, bringing together a diverse group of visionary directors to explore the boundaries of the medium without the constraints of a singular narrative style.
The film comprises five distinct shorts—'Gala,' 'Moondrive,' 'Wanwa the Doggy,' 'Tojin Kit,' and 'Dimension Bomb'—each featuring unique visual aesthetics ranging from surrealist digital art to traditional hand-drawn expressive styles. Prominent creators like Koji Morimoto and Masaaki Yuasa contributed to the project, aiming to push the technical and thematic potential of contemporary Japanese animation. The anthology was well-received by critics for its bold artistic risks and its role as a high-concept incubator for avant-garde animation talent.
