Where it came from
Genocyber is a 1994 original video animation (OVA) series produced by Bandai Visual that stands as a definitive, albeit polarizing, example of the extreme body horror subgenre within 1990s anime. Developed during a period when the OVA market allowed for high-budget, ultra-violent storytelling, the series was designed to showcase unprecedented levels of graphic imagery and nihilistic atmosphere. It is centered on the pursuit of a weaponized psychic entity, serving as a dark exploration of human cruelty and the consequences of reckless scientific advancement.
The series was directed by Koichi Ohata, an artist and director known for his contributions to the mecha and gore genres, who sought to push the limits of animated violence. The character designs and overall visual aesthetic prioritize a visceral, heavy-metal-inspired intensity, often cited for its complex animation work despite the narrative's bleak and chaotic structure. While it faced criticism for its overwhelming reliance on gore, it has since been received by enthusiasts as a cult classic that captures the uncompromising, transgressive spirit of the era's straight-to-video anime industry.
