Where it came from
Tachikomatic Days originated as a series of short, comedic vignettes included as special features on the home video releases of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. These shorts feature the series' iconic spider-like multi-pedal tanks, the Tachikoma, engaging in existential debates, philosophical musings, and whimsical experiments that contrast sharply with the grim, high-stakes espionage of the main narrative. The 2011 3D version was produced to accompany the stereoscopic release of Solid State Society, translating the established charm of these chibi-style characters into a new visual medium.
The character designs for the Tachikoma were originally developed for the series by Masamune Shirow and refined for animation by character designer Hajime Katoki. By opting for a lighter, more expressive art style in these shorts, Production I.G aimed to explore the humanity and evolving consciousness of artificial intelligence in a more approachable, satirical light. The segments became a beloved staple of the franchise, praised by fans and critics alike for providing a necessary emotional reprieve from the series' dense political and technological themes.
