When Gintoki apprehends a movie pirate at a premiere, he checks the camera's footage and finds himself transported to a bleak, post-apocalyptic version of Edo, where a mysterious epidemic called the "White Plague" has ravished the world's population. It turns out that the movie pirate wasn't a pirate after all—it was an android time machine, and Gintoki has been hurtled five years into the future! Shinpachi and Kagura, his Yorozuya cohorts, have had a falling out and are now battle-hardened solo vigilantes and he himself has been missing for years, disappearing without a trace after scribbling a strange message in his journal.
Setting out in the disguise given to him by the android time machine, Gintoki haphazardly reunites the Yorozuya team to investigate the White Plague, and soon discovers that the key to saving the future lies in the darkness of his own past. Determined to confront a powerful foe, he makes an important discovery—with a ragtag band of friends and allies at his side, he doesn't have to fight alone.

Where it came from
Released in 2013, Gintama: The Final Chapter - Be Forever Yorozuya was produced by Sunrise to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Hideaki Sorachi’s long-running manga series. Directed by Yoichi Fujita, the film was conceived as a potential conclusion to the series, weaving a time-travel narrative that explores the consequences of Gintoki Sakata's absence from a dystopian future version of Edo. The project served as a definitive cinematic centerpiece for the franchise, balancing the series' signature irreverent humor with a somber, emotional tone that resonated deeply with its established fanbase.
The film's visual identity was guided by character designer and chief animation director Shinji Takeuchi, who aimed to retain the manga's distinct aesthetic while elevating the production values for the big screen. The creative team sought to deliver a satisfying emotional payoff for viewers who had followed the characters for years, ultimately resulting in a significant commercial success. It was widely praised by critics and audiences alike for its intricate plot structure and its ability to act as both a standalone adventure and a poignant farewell to the Yorozuya's journey.
