Where it came from
Girls Band Cry is a 2024 original anime series produced by Toei Animation that centers on the formation of the band Togenashi Togeari. Directed by Kazuo Sakai, the series explores the emotional complexities of young women navigating the pressures of the music industry and personal identity, utilizing a distinctive 3D computer-generated animation style that emphasizes kinetic performances and expressive character movement.
The series was developed with an integrated approach to music and storytelling, featuring original tracks performed by the real-world band formed by the show's voice cast. It stands out in the contemporary landscape of musical anime for its focus on raw, often abrasive emotional realism, distinguishing it from more conventional idol-themed projects by prioritizing the grit of the independent band scene.
