Where it came from
The 2020 film adaptation of Gon originated from the long-running manga series created by Masashi Tanaka. Produced by the studio TECARAT, this iteration utilized stop-motion animation, a medium chosen to reflect the silent, visceral, and purely visual nature of the original source material, which famously lacks traditional dialogue. The project sought to capture the character's prehistoric, chaotic energy while adhering to the meticulous detail Tanaka was known for in his panel compositions.
The reception of the 2020 project was marked by an appreciation for its technical craftsmanship, particularly in how it translated the manga's wordless narrative style into a cinematic format. By focusing on the physical interaction between Gon and the natural environment, the studio aimed to preserve the character's role as a force of nature. It stands as a significant effort to modernize a cult classic for audiences who value the tactile, painstaking labor involved in high-end stop-motion production.
