Twintails: the glory of all mankind—or at least that is what first-year high school student Souji Mitsuka believes. At school, Souji spends most of his time daydreaming and rating girls' twintails, even going as far as creating a club dedicated to the hairstyle. His obsession does not go unnoticed, however; when monsters from outer space attack Earth and claim the world's twintails for themselves, a strange woman named Twoearle enlists Souji to fight back using twintails of his own!
By transforming into the twin-tailed warrior Tail Red, Souji combats the vicious alien organization known as Ultimegil, whose main goal is to colonize Earth and steal everyone's spiritual energy, or "attribute power." Alongside fellow twin-tailed fighters Aika Tsube and Erina Shindou, Souji must find a way to defeat the invading army and defend the twintails he holds so dear.

Where it came from
Gonna be the Twin-Tail!! originated as a light novel series written by Yume Mizusawa, which was subsequently adapted into a twelve-episode television anime by Production IMS in 2014. The series occupies a niche within the magical girl and tokusatsu subgenres, intentionally blending tropes of superhero transformation sequences with a specific fetishistic obsession for twin-tail hairstyles. The production aimed to subvert standard action anime expectations by placing the protagonist’s intense devotion to this hairstyle at the center of the narrative conflict.
The character designs were handled by Kazuhiro Shiina, who drew inspiration from long-standing conventions of anime character tropes while pushing them into exaggerated, comedic territory. The show’s reception was polarized, noted primarily by critics for its self-aware absurdity and its commitment to a premise that was intentionally bizarre. Despite its modest budget and unconventional subject matter, it developed a dedicated cult following among viewers who appreciated its lighthearted satire of the transformation-hero genre.
