The seventh lunar month in the Chinese calendar is the ghost month. DouDou goes to stay with Grandma on the lunar 1st of July, the day the host gate is opened. Grandma performs Taoist ceremonies for the deceased and communicates with ghosts. One day, DouDou accidentally lets the devil out of an urn. The devil possesses a sleepy house cat and tells DouDou that he can see invisible friends by applying Grandma's tears into his eye-lid. Little does DouDou know that this is part of the devil's plot to eat all of the ghosts.
"Grandma And Her Ghosts" resembles the style and the touch of the great Hayao Miyazaki ("My Neighbour Totoro") with the strong root of the Taiwanese culture.

Where it came from
Grandma and Her Ghosts, also known as Grandma's Day Out, is a 1998 Taiwanese animated feature film directed by Wang Shaudi. Produced during a period of relative expansion for the Taiwanese animation industry, the project was designed to blend traditional folklore and local cultural values with modern storytelling techniques, aiming to reach both younger audiences and adults who valued Taiwanese heritage.
The film follows the story of a young boy sent to live with his estranged grandmother, only to discover her unique ability to communicate with spirits. The animation style is noted for its distinctive, slightly hand-drawn aesthetic that moved away from the glossy polish of contemporary Western animation, favoring a warmer, more grounded visual tone that helped the film earn critical acclaim and become a beloved classic in Taiwanese cinema history.
