His name is Baki Hanma. No one knows where he came from or where he learned his unique fighting style.
When it comes to Karate, Baki Hanma is just plain GOOD. He can defeat an opponent with a single blow and he's taking the Karate Championship by storm. In a prestigious match, he defeats competitor after competitor even though he's totally unknown and barely even ranked.
But now he's in for the fight of his life and he may have just met his match. Anything goes and his opponent can rip his nerves out -- literally. If he wins, he's the BEST. If he loses... he's DEAD.

Where it came from
Released in 1994, this original video animation served as the first animated adaptation of Keisuke Itagaki's long-running manga series Grappler Baki. Produced by Knack Productions, the project was intended to capture the visceral, high-stakes atmosphere of the underground martial arts tournaments that defined the source material. By focusing on the protagonist Baki Hanma and his quest to surpass his father, the OVA aimed to translate the exaggerated anatomical detail and intense combat sequences of the manga into a kinetic visual medium.
The production design leaned into the gritty, muscular aesthetic popularized by late 80s and early 90s action anime, emphasizing heavy line work and dynamic character proportions. While the OVA served as a foundational piece for the franchise's eventual expansion into long-form television series, contemporary reception noted its condensed narrative and experimental pacing. It remains a significant historical entry for fans of the series, representing the initial effort to bring Itagaki's hyper-violent martial arts world to life on screen.
