Where it came from
Guardian Hearts was released in 2003 as a two-episode original video animation series produced by Studio KSS. The project was adapted from the manga series by Amemiya Go, fitting into the early 2000s trend of romantic comedy anime featuring supernatural or high-concept elements. KSS, a studio known for handling various niche titles during this period, aimed to translate the lighthearted, action-oriented tone of the source material into an accessible animated format.
The character designs and animation sought to capture the quintessential aesthetic of the era, focusing on the dynamic between an ordinary high school student and a guardian-like entity sent to protect him. While the series was designed to appeal to fans of the harem and fantasy subgenres prevalent at the time, it arrived during a crowded market for similar OVA productions, resulting in a moderate reception that cemented it as a nostalgic representative of its specific studio's output during the early 2000s.
