Hiiragi Utena is a major fangirl of the magical girls protecting her city, so when she has the chance to become one herself, she leaps at the chance to join their technicolor ranks… but when she transforms, she learns she isn’t fated to be a daring do-gooder, but rather a villain on the side of evil! At first she tries to quit her new gig as the leader of the local baddies, but she quickly realizes she enjoys it and is a total natural at tormenting the magical girls she loves so much. With both a bang and a whimper, Hiragi’s journey as a magical-girl-tormenting sadist has begun!

Where it came from
Gushing Over Magical Girls, known in Japan as MahoAko, debuted as a television anime adaptation in 2024. Produced by studio Asahi Production and managed under the KADOKAWA umbrella, the series is based on the manga by Akihiro Ononaka. It emerged during a period of rising popularity for dark or subversive takes on the magical girl subgenre, purposefully contrasting traditional themes of heroism and friendship with a satirical, provocative lens that leans heavily into comedy and parody.
The character design and visual direction aim to bridge the gap between classic 'maho shojo' aesthetics and more adult-oriented, stylized tropes. By juxtaposing bright, candy-colored character designs with unexpected narrative shifts, the series seeks to deconstruct the genre's typical innocence. Upon its release, it garnered significant attention in online anime communities, where it was primarily discussed for its unconventional tonal balance and its stylistic commitment to its niche premise.
