Hated by everyone around him, Sei Handa goes about his high school life regarded as an outcast—or at least that's what he believes. In reality, Sei is the most popular student on campus, revered by all for his incomparable calligraphy skills, good looks, and cool personality. However, due an endless series of misunderstandings, Handa perceives the worship he receives from his legions of fans as bullying, leading the school's idol to shut himself off from the rest of his classmates.
But distancing himself from his peers doesn't deter them from adoring him; in fact, his attempts at drawing attention away from himself often end up unintentionally converting even the most skeptical of students into believers. Fashion models, shut-in delinquents, obsessive fangirls, and more—none can stand against the brilliance that is Sei Handa.

Where it came from
Handa-kun debuted in 2016 as a television anime adaptation produced by studio Diomedéa. It serves as a prequel to the series Barakamon, focusing on the high school years of the protagonist Sei Handa. While the original manga by Satsuki Yoshino explored a more grounded, comedic take on the character's extreme social anxiety, the adaptation shifted the tone toward a fast-paced, slapstick-heavy narrative style.
The production was helmed by director Yoshitaka Koyama, who sought to emphasize the absurdity of the protagonist's delusions regarding his popularity. The character design aimed to contrast Handa's perceived arrogance with his actual internal fragility. Upon its release, the series received a mixed reception from audiences who were either pleased by the comedic departure from the parent series or disappointed by the significant tonal shift away from the slice-of-life sincerity found in the original Barakamon.
