Haré+Guu Deluxe

Haré+Guu Deluxe was released in 2002 as a direct-to-video follow-up to the 2001 television series Jungle wa Itsumo Hare nochi Guu. Produced by Bandai Visual and animated by Shin-Ei Animation, these OVAs were created to capitalize on the cult success of the original series, which was based on the manga by Renjūrō Kintarō. The production sought to retain the surreal, chaotic comedy that defined the television run while exploring new, often darker or more experimental gags within the jungle setting.

The series design remained faithful to the unique, high-contrast aesthetic established by director Tsutomu Mizushima. Mizushima aimed to push the boundaries of comedic timing, utilizing rapid-fire editing and jarring shifts in tone that became hallmarks of the franchise. Upon release, the Deluxe OVAs were well-received by fans of the original series, who appreciated the animation team’s commitment to maintaining the bizarre character dynamics and the distinct, whimsical art style that balanced innocent slapstick with unsettling psychological humor.
