Melos is a good boy from Messina and has come to Syracuse, the magnificent city of temples, to buy a ritual sword for his sister's marriage ceremony. He meets a very talented sculptor and they become friends.
Later, the King's guards arrest Melos while he was having a walk in the castle's gardens and Syracuse's King, obsessed by the idea of assassins out to kill him, sentences him to death. Melos is desperate, but most of all he wants to be present at his sister's marriage, so he asks the King for three days to go to Messina for the celebration and then return to Syracuse where he will accept the death penalty. The King does not trust Melos, but, trying to demonstrate that nobody could trust him, asks him to find a volunteer substitute in case he breaks his promise. The sculptor accepts to be Melos' substitute in this case...

Where it came from
Hashire Melos, released in 1992, is an animated feature film adaptation of the iconic short story by Osamu Dazai, which itself was based on Friedrich Schiller's ballad Die Bürgschaft. Produced by Toei Animation, the film was released as part of a wave of literary adaptations in Japanese cinema, aiming to bring the profound themes of friendship, sacrifice, and the struggle against tyranny to a new generation through the medium of cel animation.
The film's visual identity was heavily influenced by the distinct artistic vision of director Masaaki Osumi. In an effort to translate Dazai’s internal, emotional prose into a visual narrative, the production team utilized a stylized, sweeping aesthetic that emphasized the urgency of the protagonist’s journey. While it remains a significant entry in Toei's catalog of literary-based animation, it occupies a unique niche, often discussed by critics for how it navigates the balance between the source material's dark political undertones and the demands of a feature-length family audience.
