Where it came from
Hikari no Densetsu, or Legend of Light, was produced by Tatsunoko Production and aired in 1986. The series was adapted from a popular manga by Izumi Aso that centered on the competitive world of rhythmic gymnastics. Released during a time when sports-themed anime were gaining significant traction in Japan, the show focused on the emotional and physical journey of its protagonist, Hikari Kamijou, as she strives to reach the national championships.
The character designs were handled by the studio’s creative team, who aimed to capture the grace and fluidity essential to rhythmic gymnastics. The series is remembered for its dramatic focus on the protagonist's personal growth and rivalry, mirroring the storytelling conventions of the 1980s shojo sports genre. While it remains a niche title in the broader Tatsunoko catalog, it is recognized by fans of the era for its earnest portrayal of the sport.
