Where it came from
Hikaru no Gen-chan serves as the official mascot for the NHK broadcast of the historical drama series based on The Tale of Genji. Created to bridge the gap between traditional Heian-era literature and contemporary audiences, the character was designed to distill the complex themes and courtly elegance of Murasaki Shikibu’s masterpiece into a charming, approachable aesthetic suitable for public broadcasting campaigns.
The character design leans heavily into the chibi aesthetic prevalent in Japanese institutional branding, utilizing traditional aesthetic cues such as layered silk robes and refined features to evoke the imperial atmosphere of the original source material. It was received as a lighthearted, symbolic ambassador for the drama, effectively humanizing the dense literary history for a broad television-watching demographic.
