Where it came from
Human Zoo, also known as Ningen Dōbutsuen, was produced in 1962 by Kuri Jikken Manga Kobo, an experimental animation studio founded by Yōji Kuri. Emerging from a period of intense artistic experimentation in Japanese cinema, the short film reflects Kuri’s signature surrealist style, which often utilized dark, allegorical themes to critique modern societal structures and human behavioral patterns.
The film was designed and directed by Kuri himself, who served as a pioneer of avant-garde animation in Japan. By employing a minimalist, stark visual aesthetic, Kuri intended to provoke discomfort and introspection regarding the dehumanizing nature of urban life and institutional control. Upon its release, it was noted for its unconventional narrative approach and helped establish Kuri’s reputation as a provocative figure in the international independent animation scene.
