After a freak accident involving some lightning winds up zapping him dead, 15-year-old Mochizuki Touya wakes up to find himself face-to-face with God. “I am afraid to say that I have made a bit of a blunder...” laments the old coot. But all is not lost! God says that he can reincarnate Touya into a world of fantasy, and as a bonus, he gets to bring his smartphone along with! So begins Touya's adventure in a new, anachronistic pseudo-medieval world. Friends! Laughs! Tears! Inexplicable Deus ex Machina! He sets off on a journey full of wonder as he absentmindedly travels from place to place, following whatever goal catches his fancy. The curtains lift on an epic tale of swords, sorcery, and smartphone apps!

Where it came from
In Another World With My Smartphone originated as a light novel series written by Patora Fuyuhara, which gained traction on the user-generated publishing platform Shosetsuka ni Naro before being adapted for television in 2017. Produced by Ashi Productions, the series fits into the burgeoning isekai genre, which focuses on protagonists transported to fantasy realms, often retaining modern knowledge or items to navigate their new surroundings.
The character designs and animation style were crafted to lean into the lighthearted, low-stakes tone of the original source material. By focusing on a comedic, slice-of-life approach to fantasy adventuring rather than high-stakes drama, the production sought to provide a relaxing viewing experience. Upon release, the series was received as a straightforward example of the popular fantasy-harem subgenre, drawing a dedicated audience interested in its gentle pacing and fantasy world-building.
