Where it came from
Initial D Final Stage was produced by SynergySP in 2014, serving as the conclusive adaptation of Shuichi Shigeno’s long-running street racing manga. It directly follows the events of the Fifth Stage, focusing on the final showdowns of the Project D team as they navigate the challenging mountain passes of Kanagawa Prefecture. The series was designed to provide a definitive resolution to Takumi Fujiwara’s evolution from an unassuming delivery driver to a legendary drift racer.
The production utilized a mix of traditional cel-style character animation and computer-generated imagery for the car sequences, a hallmark of the franchise’s aesthetic evolution. While the series faced scrutiny from long-time fans regarding the shift in art style compared to the earlier stages, it was ultimately received as a necessary technical conclusion to the saga. Its release marked the end of an era for the series, cementing its status as a foundational influence on the automotive and drift culture subgenres in global animation.
