Where it came from
Joy, known in Japan as Yorokobi no Kuni, was a foundational educational series produced by NHK. Emerging from the broadcaster's mandate to support early childhood development through television, the program was crafted to cultivate emotional intelligence and social awareness in young viewers. It functioned as part of a broader pedagogical shift within Japanese media, aiming to translate abstract concepts of morality and happiness into visual storytelling accessible to preschoolers.
The production design reflects the minimalist, high-contrast aesthetic characteristic of NHK educational programming from that era. Designers prioritized clear shapes and gentle color palettes to maintain a calming influence, moving away from the chaotic pacing found in commercial children's entertainment. The series was met with positive critical reception for its innovative use of puppetry and stop-motion, setting a standard for public service broadcasting that influenced domestic programming for decades.
