Where it came from
Juliet was released in 1999 by the studio Public & Basic, emerging during a period of experimentation within the Japanese direct-to-video animation market. The project reflects the studio's broader interest in character-driven narratives and the distinct visual aesthetic prevalent in late 1990s adult-oriented animation, which often leaned into moody, atmospheric storytelling.
The design and production of this title were typical of the era's freelance-driven OVA market, where small studios often collaborated with various artists to create niche content for a dedicated demographic. Because Public & Basic functioned as a boutique label, their releases were produced with limited budgets and relied on stylistic flair and evocative character designs to distinguish themselves in an increasingly crowded home video market.
