Among the ruins of the city, there is a game only children can play. It is called “Otokoyo”; a game of hide-and-seek. But whenever children play this game, one by one they would disappear into the blinds of the buildings… The story begins when a boy enters the world of Otokoyo, to find his missing sister.

Where it came from
Kakurenbo: Hide and Seek was produced in 2004 by the independent studio Yamato Works, representing a significant moment in the transition toward digital animation in Japan. The short film was directed by Shuhei Morita and emerged during a period of experimentation with cel-shaded 3D CGI, aiming to blend the aesthetic sensibilities of traditional anime with the technical possibilities of three-dimensional environments.
The film draws heavily on the Japanese urban legend of 'otokoyo,' a folklore concept involving spirits luring children into shadow-filled dimensions. The design process focused on utilizing light and darkness as primary characters, with the narrow, labyrinthine streets of the film's city serving to emphasize the isolation and vulnerability of the children. It was well-received by critics for its atmospheric tension and its successful proof-of-concept for the studio's specialized animation style, eventually earning recognition at various international film festivals.
