Karasu to Kaki no Tane

Karasu to Kaki no Tane, or The Crow and the Persimmon Seed, is a traditional Japanese folktale adapted into a short animated film produced by NHK. The story serves as a cautionary moral tale centered on the conflict between a clever monkey and a bird, highlighting themes of patience, cooperation, and the consequences of greed. Produced as part of a broader effort to animate classic Japanese literature and folklore for educational and family broadcasting, the short reflects the mid-to-late 20th-century aesthetic of public television animation.

The visual design of the piece follows the characteristic clean, narrative-driven style preferred by NHK during this period, focusing on expressive character movements and clear staging to ensure accessibility for younger audiences. The animation techniques utilized were intended to preserve the rhythmic quality of oral storytelling while updating the medium for a visual format. Upon its release, it became a recognized staple within NHK’s archives of traditional tales, appreciated for its straightforward adaptation and cultural significance.
