In the post-apocalyptic aftermath of a war between machines and their creators, machines rule while humans exist in a state of servitude. Titular character Karen leads Resistance Group 11, an eclectic group of humans who find themselves fighting for their lives as they are hunted by the robots in each episode. Is this the end of humanity? Are they fighting a losing battle?
Through Karen, we delve into a struggle between right and wrong, between indifference and love that explores some of the deepest questions about humanity. What is the difference between a thinking machine and a human being? What is a soul?

Where it came from
Karen Senki was released in 2014 as an original net animation produced by the Taiwan-based NEXT Animation Studio. The series was designed to showcase the studio's technical capabilities in 3D computer-generated imagery, stepping away from their typical news-parody shorts to explore a stylized, high-octane action narrative. The project emerged from a desire to leverage the studio's motion-capture infrastructure for a full-length episodic production.
The series features a distinct aesthetic defined by vibrant colors and exaggerated character designs that lean into a hyper-kinetic visual language. The creative team aimed to blend futuristic, post-apocalyptic themes with martial arts-inspired choreography. While it served as a significant technical milestone for the studio's animation pipeline, its reception was primarily focused on its experimental visual approach and its unique position as a Japanese-styled project originating from a Taiwanese production house.
