Karneval

Karneval, adapted from the manga series by Touya Mikanagi, was produced by Studio Manglobe and released as a television anime series in 2013, with promotional video materials and related disc content emerging around the 2012 development period. The project was conceived during a time when Manglobe was known for its distinct aesthetic choices and stylized animation, aiming to capture the intricate, colorful gothic-fantasy atmosphere of the source material. The narrative follows a young man named Nai searching for a lost friend, eventually crossing paths with a specialized government defense agency known as Circus.

The production team, led by director Eiji Suganuma, prioritized the translation of Mikanagi’s elaborate character designs and ornate world-building into motion. While the series received moderate attention for its visual fidelity to the original manga's heavy ornamentation and unique color palette, it remains a notable example of the studio's mid-period output before its eventual closure. The adaptation is often recognized by fans for its focus on character-driven dynamics and its departure from typical action-oriented tropes of the era.
