Where it came from
Kawa no Hikari, or Light of the River, was produced by NHK as a special animated television film that aired in 2009. It was based on the acclaimed 1992 novel of the same name by author Hisashi Matsuoka, which tells the poignant story of a family of rats forced to leave their riverbank home due to construction and their subsequent journey to find a new place to live.
The adaptation was directed by Katsumi Tokoro and features character designs that emphasize a gentle, hand-drawn aesthetic typical of NHK's high-quality animation projects. By focusing on themes of environmental change and familial bond, the production sought to capture the lyrical quality of Matsuoka’s original text, earning praise for its quiet emotional depth and its thoughtful portrayal of nature through an animal's perspective.
