Where it came from
Kaze no Shoujo Emily, also known as Emily of New Moon, was produced by TMS Entertainment in 2007 as an anime adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic 1923 novel. The series aimed to bring the narrative of the resilient young Emily Byrd Starr to a Japanese television audience, maintaining the period-appropriate setting of Prince Edward Island while utilizing the expressive, character-focused aesthetic common to mid-2000s shoujo animation.
The production was directed by Hiroyuki Yamazaki and featured character designs by Yuko Yahiro. The creative team focused on capturing the emotional depth and literary atmosphere of the source material, emphasizing Emily's development as a writer. Upon its release, the series was recognized for its faithful tone and artistic direction, becoming a notable entry in the long-standing tradition of Japanese adaptations of Western children's literature.
