Where it came from
Kaze no You ni, released in 2016, is a feature-length animated film produced by the Japanese studio Ekura Animal. The project was conceived as an adaptation of the manga by Tetsuya Chiba, a celebrated artist best known for his work on Ashita no Joe. The film reflects the studio's commitment to traditional storytelling styles, focusing on a narrative set in the Edo period that emphasizes themes of friendship, adventure, and the subtle beauty of rural landscapes.
The film's visual identity draws heavily from Chiba's original manga aesthetic, characterized by expressive line work and a gentle, hand-drawn quality that distinguishes it from contemporary, highly digitalized animation. Upon its release, it was received as a nostalgic and earnest contribution to the landscape of independent anime. While it did not reach the commercial heights of mainstream theatrical blockbusters, it was noted by critics for its adherence to a classic, heartfelt approach to animation that remains a hallmark of Ekura Animal's philosophy.
