The conflicting fates of human beings and wild animals are depicted in a naturalistic setting. The main character of the story is Fang, who was born to a hunting dog and a circus-runaway European wolf. Although Fang was raised by a human family, he is a wild animal after all, and is destined to live amongst nature. The story reaches its climax when Fang returns from the circus and faces his foe, a giant brown bear which killed his family.

Where it came from
King Fang, released in 1978, is a standalone television special produced by Nippon Animation during an era when the studio was gaining international recognition for its literary adaptations and animal-centric storytelling. The production was part of a wave of Japanese animation that aimed to bring emotive, nature-focused narratives to a broader audience, emphasizing themes of survival and the complex relationship between the wilderness and human encroachment.
The visual design and direction of the special draw upon the studio's established mastery of cel animation, characterized by expressive character silhouettes and evocative landscape backgrounds. While Nippon Animation is perhaps more famously associated with long-form series like World Masterpiece Theater, King Fang reflects the studio's broader commitment to high-quality one-off storytelling that balanced dramatic tension with a sympathetic portrayal of its animal protagonist, a style that was well-received for its artistic ambition during the late seventies.
