Kitty to Mimmy no Atarashii Kasa

Kitty to Mimmy no Atarashii Kasa, or Kitty and Mimmy's New Umbrella, was released by Sanrio in 1981 as a short animated film intended for younger audiences. During this period, Sanrio was actively expanding its intellectual property beyond stationery and merchandise, utilizing its animation studio to create short-form narratives that reinforced the personalities of Hello Kitty and her twin sister, Mimmy. These early films were produced to coincide with the growing global presence of the characters in the lifestyle and gift markets.

The film was part of a broader push to cultivate a deeper emotional connection with fans by establishing the sisters within a domestic, everyday context. The design and animation style reflected the gentle, pastel-toned aesthetic characteristic of Sanrio’s 1980s visual output, focusing on simple themes of friendship and sisterhood. It was received as a charming addition to the expanding Hello Kitty media canon, serving as an early example of how Sanrio utilized short-form storytelling to maintain brand consistency across their diverse array of consumer products.
