Where it came from
Kono Hoshi no Ue ni (On This Planet) is a short animated work produced by Studio Ghibli, originally released as a promotional project for the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka. It captures the studio's characteristic commitment to hand-drawn artistry and gentle, contemplative storytelling, serving as an extension of the museum's mission to foster wonder and provide a unique window into the imagination of Hayao Miyazaki and his team.
The design and direction of the film emphasize the studio's hallmark attention to environmental detail and atmospheric warmth. By utilizing traditional cel-style aesthetics in a digital era, the creators aimed to evoke a sense of timelessness that aligns with the philosophy of the museum. Upon its release, it was well-received by museum visitors as a poignant, intimate experience that reflects the studio's broader dedication to preserving classical animation techniques.
