Where it came from
The 2019 anime adaptation of Kono Yo no Hate de Koi wo Utau Shoujo YU-NO was produced by Studio feel. and Genco, intended to bring the iconic 1996 visual novel to a new generation of viewers. Developed during a period of renewed interest in classic narrative-heavy adventure games, the production sought to modernize the original complex science fiction plot involving parallel worlds and time travel while maintaining the distinct visual style established by the game’s original character designer, Ryo Nagi.
The series received a mixed reception from both long-time fans of the original game and new audiences. While the intricate, branching narrative structure presented a significant challenge for an episodic format, the adaptation is noted for its attempt to capture the somber, metaphysical atmosphere of the source material. It remains a notable entry in the studio's catalog for its commitment to adapting a foundational piece of visual novel history.
