Where it came from
Kyuukyoku Choujin R, known as Ultimate Superman R, originated as a manga series by Masami Yuuki that began serialization in 1985. The 1991 OVA adaptation was produced by Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions, aiming to capture the chaotic, comedic spirit of the original work, which lampooned superhero tropes and school life in mid-80s Japan. The story follows R, a teenage android with immense power and a deeply eccentric personality, navigating the absurd daily life of his classmates.
The character design for the OVA sought to retain the expressive, slightly jagged aesthetic of Yuuki’s early manga panels. It was received as a nostalgic piece of late-bubble-era animation, characterized by its dry wit and genre-bending narrative. While it did not reach the global fame of some contemporary works, it remains a cult classic among fans of 1980s and 90s experimental comedy anime for its commitment to offbeat character development and its satire of the burgeoning shonen sub-genres.
