LASTEXILE -Fam, the Silver Wing

Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing was produced by Studio GONZO as a sequel series to the 2003 original, intended to revisit the intricate dieselpunk world of Prester and its aerial mechanics. Released in 2011 to commemorate the studio's anniversary, the series shifted the focus toward a new protagonist, Fam Fan Fan, and expanded the lore of the world's geography and navigation. The production aimed to retain the unique aesthetic of the original series while transitioning to modern digital animation techniques, which allowed for more dynamic aerial combat sequences and detailed mechanical designs.

The series was directed by Koichi Chigira, who sought to capture the same sense of wonder and adventurous spirit that defined the first installment. The character designs were handled by Range Murata, whose signature style—blending retro-futuristic sensibilities with elegant, detailed figures—remained a core element of the show's identity. Upon release, the series was noted for its ambition in world-building and its commitment to the established visual language of the franchise, though it faced challenges in meeting the high expectations set by its predecessor's critical acclaim.
