Where it came from
Legacy of Aru Kararu, released as an OVA in 1993, was produced by Tokuma Shoten during a period of significant expansion for the studio's animation division. As part of a wave of original video animation projects prevalent in the early 1990s, the title was crafted to capitalize on the growing domestic market for home video releases, aiming to offer high-quality, standalone storytelling that moved beyond the constraints of television serials.
The project reflects the aesthetic trends of the era, characterized by detailed cel-based animation and a focus on atmospheric narrative. It was designed to appeal to the burgeoning audience of mature anime enthusiasts who sought depth and visual polish, though it remained a niche production. Upon its release, it was received as a competent entry within the competitive direct-to-video landscape, noted for its characteristic Tokuma Shoten house style and technical execution.
