Legend of the Forest

Legend of the Forest was produced by Tezuka Productions in 1987 as a short experimental animated film. Osamu Tezuka, often referred to as the father of manga, created and directed the piece as an homage to the history of animation itself, specifically drawing heavy inspiration from the works of Tchaikovsky and the classic techniques of Disney and Russian animator Yuri Norstein. The film was conceived as a visual symphony, structured to match the movements of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4.

The animation serves as a technical showcase for Tezuka’s desire to push the boundaries of cel animation. The narrative depicts the evolution of animation from primitive sketches to sophisticated full-color movement, interwoven with an environmentalist plea against the destruction of forests. Upon its release, it was highly regarded within the industry for its artistic ambition, ultimately winning the Grand Prize at the 1988 International Animation Festival in Hiroshima and cementing Tezuka's reputation as a visionary who remained deeply invested in experimental storytelling throughout his career.
