A prequel to Legend of Galactic Heroes, focusing more on Yang Wen-li; how he became the hero of El Facile and how he handled a couple of assignments he received afterward. Spiral Labyrinth also continues with the background of Reinhard and Kircheis where the first Gaiden left off.
A collection of independent short stories taking place prior to the Overture to a New War, some of which are adapted from the novel and some of which are completely original.

Where it came from
Legend of the Galactic Heroes Gaiden: Spiral Labyrinth was produced by studio J.C.Staff and released in 2000 as a direct-to-video series. Serving as a prequel to the sprawling space opera epic, it adapts short stories from Yoshiki Tanaka's original light novels, focusing on the formative years of key protagonists Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-li before the central galactic conflict escalated.
The animation reflects a transition in the franchise's visual history, moving away from the aesthetic established by the original Artland and Magic Bus productions of the late 1980s. While J.C.Staff sought to maintain the series' signature focus on dense political intrigue and intricate tactical warfare, the shift in production personnel brought a cleaner, contemporary digital polish to the character designs, which was met with respect by long-time fans for honoring the grounded, mature tone of the source material.
