The Butterfly Lovers is an animated re-telling of the classical Chinese story of two lovers, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai. Zhu Yingtai was a girl born into an upper-class family during China's Eastern Jin Dynasty. Since women were not allowed to attend school, she begged her family to let her go, and they consented as long as she pretended to be a young man. There she met a handsome young upper-class man named Liang Shanbo. They instantly became friends and vowed to be sworn brothers forever. Yingtai hid her real identity from "Brother Liang" through the three years they studied together at Hangzhou. Her love for him grew to consume her, and she thought of nothing else but spending all of her days with Brother Liang.

Where it came from
Liang Shan Po yu Zhu Ying Tai, also known as The Love Eterne, was released by Shaw Brothers Studio in 1963. Directed by Li Han-hsiang, the film is a definitive cinematic adaptation of the famous Chinese legend known as the Butterfly Lovers. It was produced during the golden age of Hong Kong cinema and utilized the Huangmei opera style, which integrated traditional folk singing with lush, studio-bound theatrical sets.
The film was notable for its cross-gender casting, featuring Ivy Ling Po as the male lead, Liang Shanbo. This creative decision was characteristic of the period's stylistic dedication to traditional opera aesthetics. Upon its release, the film achieved immense commercial and critical success across East Asia, effectively establishing the huangmei diao musical genre as a dominant force in regional cinema and cementing its status as a landmark of mid-century Asian film history.
