Where it came from
Libashanhe Xi Zitang, or 'The Legend of the Woodcutter,' was released as an ONA (Original Net Animation) produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures. It emerged during a period of significant growth for Chinese animation, reflecting Tencent's strategic investment in adapting domestic literature and folklore for digital streaming platforms. The series focuses on atmospheric storytelling and distinct visual aesthetics, drawing upon traditional Chinese landscape motifs while utilizing modern digital rendering techniques to appeal to a contemporary audience.
The design of the series prioritizes a painterly aesthetic intended to evoke the sensibilities of classical ink-wash painting, diverging from the hyper-stylized look of many concurrent web animations. The creative team aimed to balance artistic experimentation with narrative accessibility. Upon its release, it was noted for its departure from mainstream high-octane action tropes, receiving recognition for its deliberate pacing and its contribution to the diversifying landscape of Chinese web-based content.
