Where it came from
Life: Jinsei no Taisetsu na Toki ni... was released in 2002 as a short original net animation (ONA). It was produced as a promotional effort by the Japanese life insurance company Aflac to reach a broader audience through the emerging medium of web-based streaming. The project utilized the visual identity and mascot character of the Aflac Duck, which had become a prominent fixture in Japanese television commercials during the early 2000s.
The animation was crafted to evoke a sense of warmth and reflection, focusing on themes of family and the importance of cherished moments in life. By employing a gentle aesthetic style typical of Japanese slice-of-life storytelling, the producers aimed to humanize the insurance brand. While it remains a niche piece of corporate media, it is often studied by animation historians as an early example of using short-form digital content to build emotional brand loyalty.
