The story centers around an illness-stricken, constantly bullied orphan girl named Minori. After one rainy day, she doesn't turn up at school, having been admitted into a hospital in a distant town. Two months pass, and the girl's two school friends, Takashi and Kyōko, receive a mysterious email with no sender listed. The email reveals a summer festival taking place at a nearby town.

Where it came from
Lights of the Clione was produced by the studio Drop and released in 2017 as a spiritual successor to the earlier series Clione no Akari. The project was conceived as an experimental, short-form television anime, designed to explore themes of grief, bullying, and the fragile nature of connection through a minimalist visual style that emphasizes atmospheric storytelling over high-budget animation.
The series draws heavily from the personal experiences of the original creator, who utilized the clione, or 'sea angel,' as a central metaphor for transient beauty and resilience. Upon its release, the show was noted by critics for its somber tone and unconventional structure, functioning more as a visual poem than a traditional narrative, which positioned it as a niche yet poignant entry within the late 2010s landscape of independent-style Japanese animation.
