Where it came from
Love Letter was designed by Seiji Kanai and first published in 2012 by Alderac Entertainment Group. The game was born out of a design philosophy emphasizing extreme minimalism, consisting of only sixteen cards that create a complex and engaging social deduction experience. Kanai developed the concept to explore how a rich narrative could emerge from a very restricted set of mechanics and components.
The game is set in the fictional Kingdom of Tempest, where players compete to deliver a love letter to the Princess by navigating the court's hierarchy and intrigue. Its visual design has undergone various iterations, ranging from the original Japanese edition's simple aesthetic to later versions featuring lush, romanticized illustrations by artists like Jeffrey Himmelman and Andrew Hepworth. It gained widespread acclaim for its portability and depth, eventually becoming a staple of modern micro-games.
