Provenance

Where it came from

Lupin the 3rd: Bye Bye, Lady Liberty was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha and released in 1989 as the first of what would become a long-running series of annual television specials. Directed by Osamu Dezaki, a veteran of the industry known for his dramatic flair and distinct visual style, the film was conceived to revitalize the Lupin franchise for a new generation of viewers, transitioning the tone from the darker, more adult-oriented themes of the earlier series toward the high-stakes, globetrotting adventure format that defined the subsequent decades.

The narrative follows Lupin III to the United States, where he becomes entangled in a high-tech heist involving a massive computer chip hidden within the Statue of Liberty. Dezaki utilized his signature 'postcard memories'—still, high-contrast scenes that emphasize emotional beats—to ground the character designs, which were updated to reflect the aesthetic trends of the late 1980s. The special was well-received upon release, establishing a successful template for the franchise and cementing the role of the television special as the primary medium for new Lupin stories for many years.
