There’s a secluded house in the desert where Fujiko Mine helps a man named Randy take care of his frail son Gene. It’d be idyllic, if it weren’t a lie. Randy’s embezzled a load of cash, and Fujiko couldn’t care less about the family. Or... is that the lie? When the corporation Randy stole from sends a bizarre man to kill him, Fujiko heeds Randy’s request to protect Gene, and goes beyond the pale for the boy.
Still... could that be yet another lie? Gene knows where the money is, and refuses to say until he’s avenged his father. What will Fujiko do? Will her lies spin out of control? Or was every man just playing to her tune from the start? All things may not be what they seem in Takeshi Koike’s newest Lupin the IIIrd film, Fujiko’s Lie!

Where it came from
Released in 2019 by Telecom Animation Film, Lupin the IIIrd: Fujiko's Lie serves as the third entry in a gritty, stylistic sub-series that reimagines the classic Monkey Punch characters through a darker, more mature lens. Directed by Takeshi Koike, the film acts as a sequel to the previous installments A Woman Called Fujiko Mine and The Gravestone of Daisuke Jigen, focusing specifically on the enigmatic Fujiko Mine as she navigates a dangerous web of betrayal involving a young boy and an elusive assassin.
The aesthetic of the film continues Koike’s signature hard-boiled approach, which leans heavily into high-contrast shadows, stark character silhouettes, and an intense, retro-inspired animation style. By stripping away some of the traditional slapstick elements associated with the franchise, the production team aimed to emphasize Fujiko's agency and psychological depth. It was well-received by fans of the adult-oriented spin-offs for its atmospheric direction and commitment to a bold, unconventional visual identity.
